Starting and finishing in Havelock North Village, MCL Construction TRIPLE PEAKS will include spectacular terrain, that has never been experienced in the event before. Be prepared to be impressed.
Traversing Mt Erin, Mt Kahuranaki and iconic Te Mata Peak, the course will cross private land, and take in some incredible breathtaking Hawke's Bay scenery. The course is rugged, testing and very rewarding. Enjoy beautiful ancient woodland, craggy ridgetop views, scenic farmland, fun single track, gravel road and a few hearty crossings of the Tukituki River.
Solo competitors will complete the entire course.
Leg 1: MT ERIN (distance 15 kms - total elevation gain 597m)
Participants on leg 1 will depart Havelock North Village en masse, and be guided through the streets of Havelock North until reaching the hills. Then it's all go! Passing through historic Kopanga Station, competitors will then enjoy a steady climb to the top of Mt Erin (489 m), and then a fast, fun descent to the Tukituki River, at Rochfort Road.
Leg 2: MT KAHURANAKI (distance 22 kms - total elevation gain 848m)
Participants on leg 2 will gently climb up from the Tukituki River transition, across farmland (thus avoiding the tar sealed section). Upon reaching the access road to Mt Kahuranaki, participants will head up to the 646m trig via new tracks on the south side of this hill, where they will then enjoy a fun, fast descent back (on a different route to the uphill track) back down to the River to cross at the same point as transition 1.
Leg 3: TE MATA PEAK (distance 18 kms - total elevation gain 579m)
Participants on leg 3 will ''take the baton'' at the Tukituki River crossing, and then traverse beautiful farmland on the western side of the Tukituki. Upon reaching the base of Te Mata Peak, competitors will ascend to the 399m trig along beautiful single track, and then weave their way back down to the Village through Tainui Reserve and Keith Sands Grove, enjoying impressive views, beautiful native forest and fun trails along the way.

NOTE 1: The course description is subject to change and should be referred to as a guide only.
NOTE 2: Competitors must remain on the course at all times, and must not deviate from the marked tracks. Gates / fences and other items on the land must not be tampered with, and all rubbish must be removed.
The contingency plan will be ready to go should we be unable to cross the Tukituki River. Plan B is to go up and down Mt Erin twice on 4 different routes, of which the access road will be used only once. If needed this will be a really good fun route, and will be on trails never experienced before.
Following the descent to the Tukituki River, from Mt Erin, we will proceed on the western side of the river to Te Mata Peak, where we will continue the course as detailed above, and then back to the Village.
Distances for Plan B course: Leg 1 - 17 kms, leg 2 - 15 kms, and leg 3 - 13 kms
The transition points will be different for the Plan B course. The first transition would be located in a paddock off Middle Road, just past the Mutiny Rd turnoff. About 10 mins from Havelock North. Transition 2 would be located along Matangi Road, off Waimarama Rd (behind Te Mata Peak).

NEW for 2018! You can choose to just complete Mt Erin - a distance of 15 kms. If going solo for 50 + kms is not your cuppa tea, and you can't find a few buddies to do a relay team with you - then this is a great solution! Low-key and non-competitive. You can still explore private land, and be part of the buzz of the event!
You will start with everyone else at 8.30am, in Havelock North - and you will finish at the transition point next to the Tukituki River. Note that you will have to cross the river! Approx 15 kms total distance. You can choose to run, walk or MTB. We encourage you to organise a friend or family member to pick you up from your finish point (Rochfort Rd, off Kahuranaki Rd), but a complimentary mini-bus will be provided for anyone who is stuck for transport. This will bring you back to the event village.
Only $30 to enter this single leg option, before 23 Feb - and $40 after this date.
This is intended as a fun, non-competitive category. Please note that if you enter this category you will NOT be eligible for the 30th anniversary giveaways at the finish line, medals, or the goodie bags. Hence the very reasonable entry fee!
Please note: There will be a cutoff time at the base of Te Mata Peak - before the ascent. This will be approx 8 hrs (to be confirmed). If a competitor does not reach Te Mata Peak by this time, they will be diverted directly to the Village via Tainui Reserve, without ascending the Peak (i.e. a short cut).

Those competitors in a relay team who are doing the 2nd and 3rd legs must make their own way to the transition point at Rochfort Road, off Kahuranaki Road. This will be easily accessible by car, and plenty of parking will be available. No buses will be provided. The distance from the Centre of Havelock North is 21 km and takes 25 minutes to drive.

Note that there will be a BAG DROP made available to all those completing the event, which will be available for collection at Matangi Road (beginning of the Te Mata Peak leg). Details about this will be provided to all entrants in email communications.
Large red arrows will be strategically placed around the course to ensure you do not get lost. The directional signage will be clear and easy to navigate.
MCL Construction TRIPLE PEAKS is a challenging event that should not be underestimated. The hills are steep and some of the terrain is technical. You WILL be challenged!
For those mountain biking, please be prepared to carry your bike on a few short sections. There may be gates and fences to climb over. And you will need to dismount your bike for the river crossing, and be prepared to get wet!
Whilst the terrain is picturesque, it is also exposed in places. You could experience strong winds, rain or blistering sunshine. We encourage competitors to be well prepared with suitable clothing, food and water. You may consider taking a hat, sunblock, electroytes and your mobile phone (in a sealed bag).

Whilst it is essential to undertake plenty of training prior to the event, it is very important that you do NOT attempt to access the private land that will be used for much of the course. This is very important. If competitors are found to be accessing private land in advance of the event, the individual involved (and their team) will be disqualified.
We are very grateful to the landowners for entrusting us with accessing their land. Please treat it with respect.
Whilst we do encourage you to bring your own water and food, Aid Stations will be provided in strategic locations. At the river crossings and on top of the 3 summits, you will find water and light snacks. Please bring sufficient water for yourself and treat our supplies as backup.
The Salvation Army are kindly assisting us with water supplies, with a 1200 litre trailer at transition, and a water truck at the top of Te Mata Peak. Marshalls will man water stations at the top of Mt Erin and Mt Kahuranaki. Cups will be available but we would prefer it if you could fill up a water bottle / bladder directly. Better for the environment!
If you require medical attention, please talk to the nearest marshal, who will refer to you the event director and medic. All medical situations should be channelled through the Event Director only. A medic will be available on each of the 3 peaks. If you are competing and see someone who is injured, please be considerate, and stop to assist. As the course is not always easily accessible, part of the safety plan is that we look after each other.
Please note that, whilst you will spend a very short time on public roads, the roads will still be open to traffic (apart from the top of Te Mata Peak). You MUST obey the road rules and you MUST obey directions given to you by marshals. Any issues will result in disqualification.

Do I have to be an expert mountain biker? NO (though please practice riding off road before the event)
What type of bike can I ride? Any bike you like! However, a full suspension bike is recommended, many participants choose to ride a hardtail. We don't recommend a downhill style bike or a skinny tyre bike. However, one or two participants have been known to race Triple Peaks on a cyclocross bike!
Can I jog at times in the walking section? NO, WALKERS MUST WALK.
Can we put two people in to the 3 person relay team? YES, please identify the name of each person doing each leg when registering.
How do we use the timing transponders? Click HERE for more information.
Is there water and food available on the course? There will be water on the summits and at the river transitions but please treat these as back ups of your own supply. Please carry sufficient water. We highly recommend that you carry an electrolyte solution and nutrition, and if you are doing it solo that you encourage a friend to support you at the transitions.
Are there toilets on the course? Yes toilets are on the course at the transition points, as well as the event start / finish.
Are there River crossings? Yes there are a couple of river crossings and there will be marshals on the crossings to assist. If you are nervous to cross, please go across with others, as a group. The following link has some good information from the Mountain Safety Council in regards to crossing rivers. Click HERE .The height of the river will always depend on the amount of rain during that period but we always try to find the safest and shallowest possible crossing.
What happens if the river is too high to cross? The contingency plan will be ready to go should we be unable to cross the Tukituki River. Will there be a Bag Drop option for all entrants? Yes, this will be made available. Details to be confirmed in email communications leading up to the event, however the bags will be left at Matangi Rd, towards the beginning of your Te Mata Peak ascent.
Is there a compulsory gear list? No, there is not (and there is no gear check the night before) but we do strongly recommend taking gear to suit changes in weather, with adequate water and nutrition, and sun protection. The weather can change quickly on the course, and you must be prepared for this.
Will sunscreen be available on the course? There will be a limited amount of sunscreen available at the transition point, at Rochfort Road. However we do advise that you take a small sachet of your own, if you feel you will require it.
Are electric bikes permitted on the course? Electric bikes are permitted on the course, however they are not eligible for podium placings. In 2019, we will introduce an e-bike category. Please ensure you are comfortable with crossing the river and riding rough terrain if you wish to embark on this challenge with an e-bike.

You can enter online until Thurs 8 March, and then at registration on the Friday night 9 March. You must bring cash or cheque to pay for your entry at registration (no Eftpos). No on-the-day entries.

Saturday 10th March 2018
8:30am for ALL competitors (note there will be no staggered start as per previous years)
Mountain bikers at the front, runners in the middle and walkers at the back. This will be clearly marked.
ALL solo competitors, and ALL relay team members who are doing the FIRST LEG ONLY, must collect their timing chip in the morning of 10th March, before the start time, so we advise you to arrive early. Note that timing chips will not be handed out at Friday night registration.
One Peak Explorer entrants will not receive a timing chip, and will be subject to manual timing.
Race start is in Havelock North Village, Te Aute Road between Porters Drive and the Central Roundabout, i.e. adjacent to Porters Hotel.
The finish line will be at the same place as the race start, adjacent to Porters Hotel. As part of the traffic management plan you will cross Porters Drive at the discretion of a marshal. Please be prepared to wait if requested. If necessary the finish order should be maintained from this point.

Plenty of free parking is available around the village of Havelock North. Please CLICK HERE for a map indicating the allocated parking area for the event day, on Martin Place. Do not park on private land or block local residents' driveways. Do not park in the village centre - as many parks here are for a limited duration and you may be fined for overstaying.
There will be some disruption to normal traffic flow. Please be patient when driving through the Village, as it's likely that there will be delays.

Note 1: there will be no 6 person team category or Te Mata Traverse for MCL Construction TRIPLE PEAKS 2018. Also, the Schools Team Category which has been promoted in recent years will be blended in to the above listed categories. The Schools Team trophy will still be awarded.
Note 2: individuals entered in to the walking category are not permitted to run on the course, at any stage. Disqualification will be at the discretion of the Event Director.
Note 3: Corporate Teams entered can be any blend of male / female competitors, e.g. 2 males/1 female, or 3 females, etc. All will be entered under the same category, but you will be able to determine your gender placing in the final results online after the event.
Note 4: For participants under the age of 15, please refer to point 16 under Race Regulations. You are required to fill in a form prior to registering for the event and must receive written approval from Race Directors before competing. Form can be downloaded HERE.

Competitors will receive a full refund less a $15 administration fee if we are notified of their inability to compete by midnight 11th February 2018.
Refunds after this date until midnight 18th February 2018 will be reimbursed at 50% of entry fee.
There are no refunds from midnight 18th February 2018 to race day.
Entries can not be deferred until following years.
If you wish to make changes to your entry, e.g. a change in name or other alteration, a $15 administration fee may apply. You MUST inform Event Directors to any changes or withdrawals. This is essential from a safety perspective.
These policies are applicable in ALL circumstances, please do not ask for exceptions.
In the unlikely event of Force Majeure or Extreme Weather conditions, the event may be cancelled at any time. We will communicate this to all participants via email, the website and Facebook. In this situation entry fees are non-refundable. Best endeavours will be made to re-schedule the event. If the event is re-scheduled and you are unable to attend on the new date, your entry fee will not be reimbursed.
